🔒 In browser-only mode, files stay on your device. In the optional self-hosted Docker mode, WhatsApp files are sent to your own server and stored on its mounted disk.
How ChatLume works
ChatLume reads and processes chat exports in your browser using JavaScript. A static/browser-only deployment never sends the file to a server. An optional self-hosted Docker deployment can upload WhatsApp exports to the administrator's server disk for persistent storage; use only behind your own access proxy.
What data we collect
None. ChatLume does not have a backend server, database, or analytics that track individual users. We do not collect your name, email, IP address, or any personal information. We do not read, store, or transmit your chat files.
Cookies and local storage
ChatLume uses your browser's localStorage for small preferences and the last reading-position pointer. The ZIP copy and its filename, display name and message anchor are kept in browser-private OPFS storage and IndexedDB. Your operating-system file path is not exposed to the browser. We set no tracking cookies or analytics.
Third-party services
ChatLume loads zip.js (from jsDelivr) to read ZIP exports in-browser, the Phosphor icon font (from unpkg), and a cookieless, self-hosted Umami page-view counter. None of these receive your chat data.
Your chat data
Your chat files are processed locally in your browser. In Docker storage mode, the WhatsApp archive is also transmitted to and kept on your self-hosted server so it can be reopened after reload. You can delete stored server copies from the chat list.
Persistent Storage
Persistent Storage is on by default for WhatsApp in this local setup. Each export is copied unchanged into the browser's private Origin Private File System with a small IndexedDB record containing its filename, display name and last visible message anchor. This lets ChatLume reopen the chat at the same point without asking you to pick the ZIP again. The original filesystem path is deliberately unavailable to browser applications. You can turn storage off or delete saved copies from Settings.
Stored chats live only in that browser on that device. They are not uploaded, synced, or visible to any server. Anyone who can use that browser profile can open them, so treat the setting like leaving a document on the device. You can delete individual stored chats or all of them at any time from Settings, and clearing the site's data in your browser removes them too. Turning the setting off stops new copies but keeps existing ones until you delete them.
Stored chats are ordinary browser site data. Depending on your device and browser settings, that data may be included in your own device or browser backups, and it may be removed by the browser's storage-management features (for example when disk space runs low). ChatLume has no control over either.
Children's privacy
ChatLume does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children under 13.
